Smartphone users have outstripped non-smartphone users when it comes to downloading applications and accessing online content, according to comScore Inc. A new study by the research firm indicates that smartphone users make up 60 percent of mobile users who download applications and 55 percent of those who access content online.

ComScore said more than 75 million mobile phone users downloaded applications August while nearly 81 million accessed content online. The use of smartphones for such purposes have soared tremendously compared to August 2009, the company said.

"That smartphone owners now represent the majority of the U.S. mobile audience accessing downloaded applications and browsers represents a watershed moment in the industry," comScore senior vice president of mobile Mark Donovan said. "Although smartphones still make up less than a quarter of the U.S. mobile market, they are generating the lion's share of mobile content consumption. With smartphones' share of the pie destined to get greater over time, marketers and content providers should begin to shift their focus towards developing with primarily these devices in mind."
