Quantum Dot laser wins Green IT Award

The award distinguishes quantum dot laser technology as having given a significant contribution to the energy efficiency of IT equipment.

The Green IT Award was made to pick-out and honor contributions to the development, expansion, and application of IT equipment, services, and solutions which reduce society's energy consumption. It has the aim of increasing the prevalence of green IT and bringing about a society that both sustains the environment and promote economic growth.

The products recognized by the award are the quantum dot (QD) lasers, Quantum dot (QD) lasers are state-of-the-art semiconductor lasers which are formed using quantum dots on the surface of a semiconductor substrate and which fully leverage the so-called quantum effect. Compared to other types of semiconductor lasers, QD lasers are said to have lower power consumption, superior temperature stability, and higher temperature tolerance.

This technology was proposed back in 1982 by Professor Yasuhiko Arakawa, Director of the Institute for Nano Quantum Information Electronics, The University of Tokyo. Subsequently, it was nurtured through an industrial-academic collaboration between Fujitsu and the University of Tokyo. Later, QD Laser, Inc. was established to commercialize the technology, allowing the company to begin mass production of QD lasers for use in optical communications.

The Green IT Award highlighted the advanced capabilities of this device technology, with its wide range of potential medium- to long-term applications. At the same time, it also outlined the creative thinking which brought researchers to deliver innovation by leveraging the principles, achievements, and other innovations in a 15-year-long industrial-academic collaboration.
