NXP Semiconductors NV reports that the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transport Authority (LA Metro) in California will begin using the company's MIFARE Ultralight contactless chip technology for bus tickets. The single and limited-use paper tickets will use the technology within the existing automatic fare collection infrastructure.

There were over 353 million bus boardings in LA in 2009. The contactless paper tickets are expected to improve the customer experience for the large volume of passengers by reducing lines at point of entry, enabling faster boarding and exiting and making upgrades easier. The technology is also expected to significantly lower maintenance costs for the transport operator.

NXP's contactless IC technology is being utilized for limited-use ticketing by other transport authorities. In Russia, the Moscow Metro uses the technology for on average of nine million passengers daily. The contactless chip solution is based on the ISO/EC 14443 infrastructure standard.
