Ethernet switches boast MIPS processors

Six new Ethernet switches from Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. are built using MIPS Technologies Inc.'s processors, and coupled with Vitesse's EcoEthernet 2.0 green technology, are said to deliver high performance and energy efficiency levels.

The VSC7424, VSC7425, VSC7426 and VSC7427all members of Vitesse's SparX-III switch familyare designed for green enterprise and small/medium business and enterprise (SMB/SME) applications, including customer-premises equipment on the network edge, and multiple dwelling unit/multiple tenant unit access devices.

The SparX-III family offers "industry-leading" power savings, differentiated service delivery, and network security while delivering up to 25 percent faster network management and up to 50 percent power consumption reduction in SME networks, Vitesse said.

Meanwhile, the VSC7428 and VSC7429, part of the new Caracal switch family, which is in turn part of the broad, scalable family of Carrier Ethernet Switch Engines, are designed for carrier Ethernet, mobile backhaul and FTTx passive optical network applications.

The family's key features include network timing and performance monitoring for migrating mobile backhaul or packet-based 3G and 4G wireless networks. The embedded MIPS processors offer the ability to run customer management and control software while delivering a warm restart capability.
