Lightwave wins patent for "tricyclic spacer"

Lightwave Logic Inc. has been granted a US patent for its "tricyclic spacer" for non-linear optical devices. It is the first patent granted to the development stage company, which is focusing on next-generation electro-optic polymer material platform for high-speed fiber-optic data communications and optical computing applications.

The US Patent Office signed Patent No. 11/666,399, titled "Tricyclic Spacer Systems for Non-Linear Optical Devices."

"Our tricyclic spacer is unique to Lightwave's approach to stabilizing non linear organic structures, which gives us tremendous flexibility to meet the specific design specifications of potential partners and customers," Lightwave Logic chief scientific officer Dave Eaton said. He explained that a tricyclic spacer is "an ancillary group attached to the core of the non-linear optical chromophore which prevents undesired dimerization, which can destroy the polar orientation required for effective nonlinear response."
