Single-chip 4G basestation solution 'eNodeB' enables picocell designs

Mindspeed Technologies Inc. collaborated with ArrayComm LLC and Continuous Computing Corporation to deliver a complete commercial eNodeB solution for LTE-FDD and LTE-TDD networks.

Mindspeed's Transcede SoC 3G/4G/LTE baseband processor equips the jointly developed LTE eNodeB solution superior spectrum efficiency, capacity and peak data rates with extremely low latency.

The solution also consists of Trillium LTE software stack from Continuous Computing, which is currently in multiple LTE field trials worldwide, and ArrayComm's complete, standards-compliant, interoperable physical-layer (PHY) software. This solution is made to speed-up the development of LTE basestations that scale economically from femto to macro cell system designs.

Marketing director for Mindspeed's communications convergence processing (CCP) business unit, Alan Taylor says, "The solution leverages the Transcede family's computational horsepower and scalable architecture to meet heavy LTE processing demands, while enabling the same layer one and layer two software components to be ported across a wide range of platform designs."

Meanwhile, Director of product line management with Continuous Computing, Todd Mersch says, "Being able to port our field-proven, carrier-class Trillium LTE software across multiple Transcede-based equipment designs, from femtocells to macro basestations, is an extremely powerful value proposition for manufacturers of next-generation LTE access equipment. This solution will rapidly accelerate time-to-market, while significantly reducing system cost."

A new class of high-performance silicon, the Transcede family of SoCs could bring three sectors of LTE processing in a single device and enables the first 64-user "picocell on a chip." Concurrently, it gives substantial processing headroom using a modular software approach that allows manufacturers to merge their own proprietary, value-added features to a standard eNodeB implementation, such as network listening for basestation self-optimization and auto-configuration. The solution utilizes an innovative, task-based hardware architecture model that permits software developed on one Transcede device to be ported to other products within the Transcede family across the full range of system platforms, including enterprise femtocell, picocell (indoor and outdoor), microcell and macrocell basestations.
