Altera Corp. reported a 12-percent quarterly increase in sales for the third quarter of 2010 and an 84-percent rise from Q3 2009.

The company announced sales of $527.5 million in Q3, with new product sales increasing 24 percent sequentially. Net income for the period reached $217.5 million, or $0.69 per share, compared with $180.6 million in Q2 2010 and $56.7 million in Q3 2009.

Altera, the first company to successfully demonstrate 25Gb/s transceiver performance in programmable logic devices, reported year-to-date cash flow from operating activities of $646.5 million. The quarter ended with $2.4 billion in cash and short-term investments.

John Daane, Altera's president, chief executive officer, and chairman of the board, credited growth in telecom and wireless demand and "stellar new product growth" for the strong Q3 figures. "We are in the final stages of development for our initial 28nm FPGAs and believe that the unique architectural features and performance we offer will extend our current 40nm technology leadership to this next process node," he said.

Altera, the lone company producing FPGAs with transceivers operating at 11.3Gb/s, recently launched its Embedded Initiative in a bid to promote a new system-level integration tool that provides a single FPGA design flow supporting a range of embedded processor offerings based on ARM, Intel, and MIPS architectures, as well as the company's own Nios II processor.
