The Empire State Development Corp., an agency of New York state, has begun the process of taking over a technology park in Saratoga County that contains a 300mm fab owned by GlobalFoundries Inc. The park is said to be troubled by infrastructure delays, including problems with roads, gas and power lines.

The park is a development of the Luther Forest Technology Campus Economic Development Corp. Luther Forest was able to attract Advanced Micro Devices Inc. to build a fab in the park. AMD later spun off its manufacturing unit into GlobalFoundries, which has assumed control of the fab.

"The process has begun," said a spokeswoman from the Empire State Development Corp. "GlobalFoundries raised concerns about delays with infrastructure."

The spokeswoman insisted the Empire State group can "get the project back on track."

"The Fab 8 project is on schedule and construction is progressing very smoothly. We just have some concerns about a few pieces of infrastructure that need to be delivered. The state and Luther Forest are working out the details and we are confident they will address our concerns," according to a spokesman for GlobalFoundries.

The wafer fab that is under construction is dubbed Fab 8. It will run 22nm production and more advanced nodes. Construction for Fab 8 started in July 2009. The fab will have 60,000 wafer starts per month once it goes into full production. Production is expected to go online in 2012.
