Ultra-hard metric cable assembly supports 12Gb/s transfer

3M has unveiled its latest Ultra Hard Metric (UHM) Cable Assembly, the next generation of backplane and rear IO cable assemblies targeting the embedded computing industry's move toward high-speed, high-density serial protocols.

The 3M UHM Cable Assembly is a fully shielded, low crosstalk 2mm hard metric (HM) cable assembly specifically designed for up to 12Gb/s data transfer when used with industry-standard 2mm HM (IEC 61076-4-101) or 3M HSHM back>plane headers.

3M said standards-based CompactPCI and VME 64x embedded computers utilizing the UHM Cable Assembly will be able to support cable to board rear IO equipped with multi-gigabit high-speed serial protocols such as SAS, SATA, Rapid IO, PCI Express and Gigabit Ethernet.

The cable assembly features a modular "snap together" wafer design that allows customization to specific applications up to 50 high-speed differential channels per mating connector. Crosstalk is minimized using full 360-degree shielding for each differential pair, which also supports high density high-speed signals.

David Schneider, global business manager for 3M Interconnect Solutions, said the new cable assembly "complements 3M's earlier introduced UHM socket connector, which was adopted by the PICMG 2.30 standard to support high-speed serial protocols in legacy 3U and 6U form factors."
