Exar Corp. has unveiled the XRP7664, a new synchronous pulse width modulation (PWM) step-down converter with a maximum load current of 2A and operating input voltage of up to 18V.

The newest member of Exar's PowerBlox family of high-voltage, high-current step-down regulators is optimized for a 12V input voltage rail, but is also capable of operating from the popular 5V rail.

Exar said the XRP7664 delivers a smaller footprint and substantial cost savings in such applications as STBs and other audio-video equipment, telecom, computing peripherals and more generally distributed point-of-load conversions.

Key features include up to 93percent efficiency, a compact "green" 8-pin SOIC package, a fixed 340kHz switching frequency, output voltage adjustable down to 0.925V with 3% accuracy using two external resistors that can be achieved from any single input voltage from 4.75V to 18V, and built-in current limit, output over voltage and thermal shutdown protection. A dedicated enable function and programmable soft start further boosts design flexibility of any point-of-load supply.
