NanoMarkets predicts that transparent conductors have a bright future ahead, due to the emerging OLED industry. A report from the industry analyst firm states that some $500 million worth of transparent conductors will be needed in OLED displays and lighting in 2016.

NanoMarkets also claims that makers of transparent conductor alternatives will get a chance to grab market share from indium tin oxide (ITO) as prices prompt makers of OLED-based devices to seek less expensive options.

Manufacturers of conductive polymers and non-ITO transparent conductive oxides will both benefit from the growth of the OLED industry as tin oxide and zinc oxide are viable ITO replacements. On the other hand, the flexible lighting and flexible displays that will come to market in three to five years will use conductive polymers, which will also be used extensively in OLED hole injection layers, as well as electrodes.

NanoMarkets also said that the industry is now banking on nanosilver and nanocomposites instead of nanocarbon materials to provide the next generation of transparent conductive materials.
