Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd's European division is launching an annual award that aims to encourage European students to show their skills in mixed-signal of RF design.

The TSMC Europractice Innovation Award will give the winning student s six-month's employment in one of TSMC's fabs in Taiwan and the opportunity to see his or her design run through the fab to production.

"Finding and encouraging talent is starting to be an issue. This will be a tremendous boost to a student's CV," said Maria Marced, president of TSMC Europe BV. She added that TSMC, IMEC and the Global Semiconductor Alliance are coming together to support the award and hope it will highlight to young people how engineering is an exciting and rewarding high-status profession.

The entrants will effectively be those students preparing designs for multi-project wafer runs with the academic branch of the Europractice service in Europe, said Marced.

The winner will be announced at the meeting due to be held in Munich in May 2011. "The judging will be based on multiple criteria including innovation, manufacturability, power efficiency and economic viability," said Marced.
