Mobile phones could soon turn into life savers, if Alcatel-Lucent researchers and system engineers could have their way.

While mobile phones have become the single most important gadget for millions of people, who use them as their main communication device, organizer, entertainment device, and news source, Alcatel-Lucent now wants them to become an early warning device in the event of a disaster or emergency.

The company has established the Broadcast Message Center (BMC) to deliver targeted emergency alerts via SMS to people based on their geographical location. The alerts may be sent to as big an area as an entire country or as small as a city block. Advance trials show that the alerts comply with U.S. and European standards, according to Alcatel-Lucent.

Among those who have already tested or are testing the BMC system are Sprint and the California Emergency Management Agency and the Florida Division of Emergency Management.

Alcatel-Lucent said the system is flexible and highly scalable and may even be used for commercial purposes. Possible applications include as a marketing channel for advertisers and interest groups and as an alert system for a mobile workforce.
