Zilog Inc. debuts detection and control technology for motion detection applications including customer sensing and energy management applications such as lighting control.

The Zmotion module offers sensing and control technology which includes an MCU with embedded software designed for products requiring control based on passive IR (PIR) motion detection. The module is designed to drop directly into applications making it a fast implementation with reduction in development time.

The module combines the programmability and features of Zilogs Z8FS040 series of MCUs with software that expands motion detection capabilities. The combination is then tuned with a pyroelectric sensor and a low profile Fresnel lens for a package that is optimized for multiple motion sensing and control applications.

The Zmotion module is suitable for "on-demand lighting controls based on occupancy, access control, display systems and general purpose proximity sensing," according to Steve Darrough, director of worldwide marketing, Zilog. He adds that it is " an easy way to add energy management capabilities to various applications such as vending machines, escalators, gates, doors and appliances where activation is based on a moving person, thus saving energy."

The module is in production and is available to ship to customers that place orders through distributors.
