Global shipments of H.264 decoders will grow by 20 percent annually through 2013, according to an In-Stat report, indicating the growing popularity of the compression scheme.

Principal analyst Michelle Abraham said the H.264 compression offers lower bit rates and smaller file sizes, making it a popular option for networked video solutions. "The proliferation of video applications, such as user-generated content and online video streaming, embedded DVRs and mobile video are serving to increase demand for low cost, high-quality encoders," she said.

The In-Stat report predicts that shipments of H.264 chip units worldwide will increase by 51 percent in 2010. The report also found that Broadcom was the largest supplier of H.264 decoder ICs for the satellite STB market while ST, MediaTek, and Renesas led the SD MPEG-2 cable, DVD decoder IC, and Blu-ray SoC markets in 2009.

The In-Stat report also analyzes MPEG IC markets for various applications and worldwide forecasts for multiple types of MPEG ICs for several types of applications through 2014.
