Fujitsu Semiconductor Europe reports that its powerline communication (PLC) solution has received compliance certification from the PoweRline Intelligent Metering Evolution (PRIME) Alliance.

The solution combines the company's MB87S2080 communication SoC and a software stack. The company claims it cuts development time for PRIME-compliant meters. The certification process was performed by Tecnalia, an independent certification entity authorized by PRIME Alliance.

PRIME is a narrow band powerline communication technology based on OFDM that provides up to 128Kbps communications for smart grid applications. The PRIME Alliance is an industrial consortium focusing on the development of an open, public and non-proprietary telecom solution to support smart metering functionalities and push the implementation of 'smart grids' globally. The alliance's specifications for powerline communications allow utilities companies to safely use technologies from different vendors to achieve the best solution for their needs, and PRIME certification guarantees interoperability.

Fujitsu Semiconductor Europe is a member of the PRIME Alliance, with utilities, meter manufacturers, silicon providers, research institutes and system integrators.
