Implement triple-rate SDI with FPGA

The triple-rate serial digital interface (SDI) supporting the SMPTE SD-SDI, HD-SDI, and 3G-SDI standards is widely employed in professional broadcast video equipment. SDI interfaces are used in broadcast studios and video production centers to carry uncompressed digital video along with embedded ancillary data, such as multiple audio channels.

Virtex-6 FPGA GTX transceivers are suited for implementing triple-rate SDI receivers and transmitters. This document describes how to implement triple-rate SDI interfaces using Virtex-6 FPGAs.

The GTX transceivers in Virtex-6 devices are similar to the RocketIO GTX transceivers in Virtex-5 FXT and TXT devices. The differences important to SDI interfaces are described in this application note by Xilinx.
