Indonesia switches on WiMAX-Wi-Fi roaming service

Keywords:broadband? WiMAX? Wi-Fi? LTE?

Indonesian broadband customers will now be able to seamlessly switch between WiMAX and Wi-Fi services, and possibly even LTE in the future, using a broadband roaming service launched by a non-profit organization.

The ID-WiBB, tasked to promote interoperability of broadband wireless products in Indonesia, said the service involves three operators awarded WiMAX derived Wireless Broadband licenses and Aptilo Networks, which was selected to enable the multi-access service.

The service uses the Aptilo Service Management Platform as an AAA proxy for the authentication, authorization and accounting of roaming users between the different WiMAX and Wi-Fi service providers. The system tracks roaming subscribers' time and amount of data consumed and provides the required statistics to allow ID-WiBB to serve as a neutral accounting party. LTE support is expected to be added to the Aptilo platform in 2011.
