NXP Semiconductors has declared a trial run of the European emergency call system eCall a success after three BMW cars equipped with the SMS-based system arrived in Brussels after a 16,000-kilometer journey across the EU.

The three cars, which departed Madrid, Athens, and Helsinki separately, were able to send SMS messages from each of the country they passed through, proving that the system works across borders, NXP Semiconductors said in a statement.

The system uses NXP's telematics solution called Automotive Telematics On-Board unit, or ATOP. Some 15,000 eCalls were sent out by the test cars via Deutsche Telekom and its roaming partners during the two-week trial run, according to the statement.
