Growth in global TV shipments slowed down to 9 percent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2010, after several quarters of more than 20 percent rise, according to the latest DisplaySearch market report.

TV manufacturers shipped some 59.8 million TV sets in Q3 2010, apparently due to weak demand in North America and a softer sell-through of TV sets during the World Cup in Western Europe. China, once a hotbed of TV sales, also reported higher inventory just before the country's Golden Week holidays in October. Sales picked up during the holiday, however.

Except for the CRT TV market, most TV technologies saw positive year-on-year growth. The report states that plasma TV shipments rose 35% to more than 4.8 million units while LCD TV shipments jumped 22% to 45.7 million units. North America also reported an increase in shipments of DLP rear projection TVs.

Nevertheless, Q3 2010 was still the weakest quarter of annual shipment growth since Q4 2008.
