Fujitsu Semiconductor Ltd has created a new LSI chip to be used in the graphic displays of next-generation automotive digital dashboards and car navigation systems

Scheduled for shipment at the end of December 2010, the MB86R11 is a single-chip system LSI that integrates and ARM Cortex-A9 CPU core with four video inputs, up to 3 display outputs, and several peripheral interfaces for in-automotive applications.

Fujitsu said the MB86R11's rendering performance allows real-time changes to reflect the vehicle's environment such as in augmented reality applications. Various gauges may be displayed using the chip on the driver's cluster, center or head-up displays, in addition to what the vehicle's exterior cameras transmit.

The MB86R11 can generate a single image from the four exterior cameras while automatically correcting the image contrast to ensure night visibility. It can also adjust TV or DVD video image to compensate for dark or blurry scenes.

Fujitsu also plans to release a higher-resolution version of the MB86R11 for HD displays.
