Renesas Electronics Corp. has integrated and ARM Cortex-A9 core with the features required for audio and video (MPEG2, MPEG4, and H.264 HDTV) playback on a single chip.

The EMMA Mobile EV0-D series SoCs, designed for portable multimedia players, electronic book readers and network TVs, feature a smaller (by one-third) package size even with DRAM integrated using system-in-package technology. The EMMA Mobile EV0-S SoCs, meanwhile, have no integrated DRAM.

The devices are slated to be integrated into Renesas' "R-Mobile" series of mobile SoCs.

Renesas said the EV0-D ($35) and EV0-S ($30) will be available in sample quantities starting April 2011. Mass production target date is October 2011.
