Automating rules check for safety-critical design

Keywords:safety-critical designs? bugs? HDL-based?

During the development process for safety-critical designs, all precautions should be taken to prevent device failures from all foreseeable sources, including those due to poor design methods and processes. Poor process, such as a lack of standards, may seem innocuous but can, in fact, be a significant cause of device bugs.

One common theme across standards and processes that govern development of high assurance designs is that verification should be performed early and often. In an HDL-based design, verification can start even before design doesby establishing a set of coding standards that the designers must follow as they begin to develop their code. Establishing effective coding standards goes beyond imposing mere style guidelines on engineers. It involves enforcing safe coding practices that can mitigate downstream errors before they enter the design process.
