2010 marked the beginning of both a recovery and a consolidation cycle in the semiconductor industry. Benefiting from resilient local economies and striving regional markets, especially in China, Asian companies are in a good position to take advantage of next years' continued market growth and industry consolidation. They will have opportunities to not only increase their global market shares, but also secure the leadership in fast growing emerging segments, such as the portable electronics market.

Toquet: Asian semiconductor companies and their OEM/ODM customers will increase their investments to? create better portable multimedia products.

According to research firm, In-Stat, total global unit shipments of Portable Entertainment Devices (PEDs) with embedded 3G/4G radios will be more than 100 million in 2011.Adding Smartphones, the total shipments of portable multimedia devices will exceed 400 million units next year. There is little doubt that this represents the most attractive emerging segment of global electronics market.

Market trends
At CEVA, we currently see the need for more programmability and enhanced connectivity as the main technology trends currently surrounding the electronics markets. Those trends are already accelerating in the home entertainment market, where multimedia devices like DTVs, set-top boxes and game consoles are now becoming "connected", "multistandard" and "multipurpose." These trends also carry through to the booming portable multimedia electronics market.

Apple's successive and successful launches of the iPod, iPhone and iPad has boosted the market for such portable multimedia devices, and set consumers' expectations for the next generation portable devices. These next-generation devices will enable consumers to carry and enjoy their favorite audio, videos and other media contents on the go, as well as to download new contents and applications on demand. They will be required to combine a user-friendly operating system and user interface, a high resolution touch-screen, large storage capacity, ubiquitous wireless broadband connectivity, and pack into a slick and compact shell as many other features as possible, including high-resolution digital cameras and intelligent image/video processing, GPS-enabled navigation and location based services, and mobile TV.
