Tyco Electronics unveils a USB 3.0 connector which improves performance and power management over the previous USB standards. The new connector meets all the standards of USB-IF and supports 5Gbit/s data rate. This translates to a tenfold performance increase over USB 2.0.

Backward compatible with USB 2.0, the USB 3.0 connector improves power efficiency by eliminating device polling and reducing active and idle power requirements. It can handle a unit load of 150mA (which is a 50 percent increase over the minimum unit load of USB 2.0), and up to six unit loads (which is 900mA, an 80 percent increase over USB 2.0 at a registered maximum of 500mA). This means that USB 3.0 has up to 80 percent more power capacity based on the configuration of the device.

Tyco Electronics is set to offer a full line of certified USB 3.0 product solutions, including various configurations of Standard A and B style plugs and receptacles; powered B plugs and receptacles; Micro B and AB plugs and receptacles; and cable assemblies. Various stacked and combination variations are expected to round out the TE USB 3.0 portfolio.
