IR LEDs improve proximity sensor sensitivity

ROHM Semiconductor rolls a series of high-performance IR LEDs that target proximity sensor applications. The SIM-030/031ST and SIM-040/041ST provide peak output of 850/870nm, compared to 950nm for comparable devices. This is closer to the peak wave sensitivity of phototransistors (sensors), thus achieving higher efficiency proximity sensing and energy savings of up to 66 percent. The LEDs are also suited for cellphones and other portable devices.

The SIM-030/031ST has a 2.3 x 1.95mm footprint and a height of 0.9mm. It has forward current of 100mA, and delivers typical emission strength of 30mW/sr.

The SIM-040/041ST is slightly bigger at 3.1 x 2.25 x 1.6mm, providing 40mW/sr, typical emission strength.

Both are priced at $0.75 for small OEM quantity orders and samples are available. Delivery time is 14 weeks ARO.
