PA module targets 3.5GHz WiMAX

Anadigics Inc. has introduced the AWB7230, a multichip power amplifier (PA) module that is designed to meet WiMAX spectrum mask requirements while delivering linear RF power and serving as the final stage amplifier in the transmit chain of either a CPE or femtocell.

Covering the full 3.3GHz to 3.8GHz band, this device supports 3.5GHz WiMAX networks worldwide, and provides power efficiency for such applications. It complements the company's AWB7221 PA released in 2010 to enable CPEs and femtocells operating in the 2.5GHz WiMAX bands.

WiMAX CPEs offer an alternative to DSL and cable modems and play a key role in the transition to 4G. The WiMAX Forum says that nearly 600 fixed and mobile WiMAX networks have been deployed in 149 countries. They forecast network coverage to be available to over 1 billion potential subscribers worldwide this year.

Key features of the AWB7230 include: its manufacture using an advanced InGaP HBT MMIC technology offering state-of-the-art reliability, temperature stability, and ruggedness; delivery of up to +29dBm of WiMAX power with low EVM; more than 30dB of RF gain; operation with 16 percent power added-efficiency at rated output power; support for all the 3.5GHz WiMAX bands, from 3.3GHz to 3.8GHz; and incorporation of RF matching networks optimized for output power, efficiency, and linearity in a 50 system.
