PoL regulator drives eight parallel modules

Ericsson Power Modules launches the 3E series BMR463 digital point-of-load (PoL) regulator. The second-generation voltage regulator offers full monitoring and dynamic control of the energy that is delivered to processors, FPGAs, ASICs, and others down to a very low, highly economical level.

The 20A rated BMR463 is designed for paralleling up to eight modules, a configuration that delivers 160A. Each module can be paralleled and un-paralleled on demand, dynamically tracking and reducing power consumption as needed, and optimizing the configuration for a wide range of load conditions. And when parallel mode is activated, an interleaving-operation cuts EMI and current-peak levels.

BMR463 digital PoL regulatorA built-in module-to-module group communication bus ensures that current sharing is controlled so that at any point of operation each BMR463 delivers the exact current required by the payload.

The BMR463 offers an output power of up to 66W from an input voltage range of 4.5V to 14V, and an output range of 0.6V to 3.3V. Input and output voltages can be programmed on demand via the PMBus, or a pin-strap can accommodate any voltage required by the external circuit, reducing the number of products required by board designers, thus lowering costs and reducing time-to-market.

The module has 97.1 percent efficiency (5V input, 3.3V output and half load) and measures 25.65mm by 13.8mm by 8.2mm, making it suitable for low board-pitch applications. Onboard protection includes input under voltage protection by shutdown, over temperature protection, and output short-circuit and over voltage protection.

Other features include voltage tracking and voltage margining, remote control and power good, a nonlinear response for reduction of decoupling capacitors, and an advanced configurability via a GUI.

The module embeds a digital core in conjunction with a highly efficient power-train and a U-shape output stage to minimize power losses while increasing lifetime and reliability.

The BMR463 is priced at $11 in OEM quantities.
