Cavium Networks and Picochip Ltd are presenting an end-to-end LTE femtocell at the Mobile World Congress featuring Cavium's Octeon embedded multicore processors and Odyssey multiprotocol programmable 4G/LTE baseband DSPs.

The Octeon processors are suited for enterprise, data center and service provider equipment including routers, switches, appliances, 3G/4G wireless base stations, RNCs, xGSNs, evolved packet core, services gateways, DPI equipment, storage switches and intelligent server adapters. The Odyssey DSPs which the company just recently acquired are designed into LTE data products.

With the rollout of LTE, operators are looking at large-scale deployments of femtocells to provide a better user experience to subscribers and reduce network load. Currently over 65 percent of mobile usage is inside buildings, where coverage can be an issue, particularly at higher frequencies of LTE. The business case for femtocells is ever more compelling, combining as it does increased targeted coverage with reduced capital and operating expenses.
