TI VDSL line driver uses 47% less power

Texas Instruments Inc. has announced that its THS6226 Class H VDSL line driver is in full production. The gated, dual-port device uses 47 percent less power than comparable Class AB alternatives. This makes it suitable for high-density VDSL applications used in high-speed broadband networks.

The device offers a digitally adjustable quiescent current and simplifies product sourcing and design by covering all VDSL profiles with a single line driver.

Key features and benefits of the device include power consumption as low as 350mW for 17a profile; adjustable quiescent current of 7.6mA to 23.5mA with a current step of 1mA; multitone power ratio (MTPR) distortion of 70dB with 19.8dBm for VDSL2 profile 8b to help maintain signal fidelity; output swing on +12V power supplies, coupled with current drive that allows for up to 20dBm output power into the load.

The device also integrates an input biasing circuit and all gain and feedback resistors to reduce system board space and cost.

TI offers a SPICE-based simulation program for designing, testing, and troubleshooting a broad variety of basic and advanced circuits, including complex architectures, without any node or number of device limitations. It also offers software for application and calculation utilities, including an active filter design application and a fully differential amplifier component calculator.

The THS6226 VDSL line driver is available now in a 5 x 5mm QFN package, priced at $1.50 in quantities of 1,000.
