Samsung Electronics has begun mass production of a black-and-white type and the color type 22-inch transparent LCD panel, which enables a person to look right through the panel like glass.

Samsung said the panel consumes 90 percent less electricity compared with a conventional LCD panel using a back light unit. A transparent LCD panel utilizes ambient light such as sunlight, which reduces the dependency on electricity for generating power.

Compared with the conventional LCD panels that use back light unit (BLU) and have 5 percent transparency, the transparent LCD panel boasts a transparency rate of over 20 percent for the black-and-white type and over 15 percent for the color type. The company claims the transparency rates outflank all other panels.

The panel has a contrast ratio of 500:1 with WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) resolution. And both the b&w and color panels incorporate HDMI and USB interfaces.

"With the world's first mass production of the transparent LCD panel, Samsung Electronics plans to lead the global transparent LCD market by developing various applications," said Younghwan Park, senior vice president of Samsung Electronics LCD Business, in a statement.

Transparent display panels can be applied in advertising applications showing windows and outdoor billboards or used in showcase events.

Corporations and schools can also adopt the panel as an interactive communication device, which enables information to be displayed more effectively.
