SSL driver IC offers 90% efficiency

Eliminating the need for electrolytic capacitors and opto-isolators, a new reference design based on SLL driver ICs has been introduced by Power Integrations Inc. The driver ICs claim to achieve more than 90 percent energy efficiency and exceeds 0.9 power factor (PF).

The reference design, tagged as DER-278, is based on the company's single-stage LinkSwitch-PH LED-driver ICs. It leverages single-stage, primary-side-control offline LED-driver technology for high efficiency and long operational usage in order to maximize the consumers' spending on LED lighting systems, especially high-reliability industrial, commercial, and exterior SSL applications.

SSL driver ballasts based on the LinkSwitch-PH ICs are suitable for designs from 5-55W.

LED-based lighting systems have the potential for a much longer operational life than incandescent or fluorescent bulbs. However, the classical two-stage topology of power-factor plus high-voltage DC-DC converter, which is sometimes used by manufacturers targeting consumer-grade bulb replacements, utilizes a high-voltage electrolytic bulk capacitor between the stages.

LinkSwitch-PH ICs

The LinkSwitch driver ICs claim more than 90 percent energy efficiency and exceeds 0.9 PF.

The longevity of the system is limited by the operational life of the electrolytic capacitor, which reportedly tends to dry out and fail, particularly when placed in an enclosed spacesuch as ballast "bricks" or bulb basesand exposed to the heat produced by two-stage power conversion and proximal high-brightness LEDs.

Without the electrolytic capacitor and the optocoupler used in traditional isolated flyback designs, designers using single-stage LED-driver ICs for SSL products can expect the operational life of the driver to exceed the 35,000 hours required by the ENERGY STAR SLL (V1.1) specification and the requirements of EN61000-3-2.

Priced between $1.18 and $1.71 each for 10,000-piece quantities, samples of LinkSwitch-PH ICs are available in a halogen-free, ROHS-compliant eSIP-7C package.
