The International Data Corp. (IDC) China Quarterly Personal Portable Navigation Devices (PND) Tracker shows that personal PND shipments in China reached 2.4 million in 2010. The leading global IT consulting firm predicts that China's total personal PND shipments will reach 7.8 million by 2015, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 26.6 percent over five years.

Navigation devices have been widely adopted by individual and commercial users. The market is mainly divided into four categories, including built-in navigation equipment, personal PND, mobile navigation, and commercial use navigation equipment.

Antonio Wang, senior research manager, personal system group for IDC China, says that among the four categories, personal PND has become the mainstream in the market due to advantages of high quality, convenience, and low price. For the future development of the market, Antonio adds that personal PND should have more intelligent content and different types of applications.

China's PND

IDC believes that personal PND will continue to attract customers on the basis of its high quality and stable prices. But with the growth of various media tablets and intelligent mobiles, increasingly smaller portable terminals will adopt navigation functions, creating a predicament for traditional personal PNDs. IDC suggests that to increase its value, personal PNDs should make a breakthrough by introducing a variety of new applications, such as weather forecasts, traffic monitoring, personal reminders, and other related applications in the next five years.

Many personal PND manufacturers are facing a new round of consolidation. In China, there are over 25 personal PND manufacturers, yet no one vendor's market share exceeds 15 percent. IDC's "2010 ConsumerScape 360" report shows that the stability of brands, product quality, and individual customers are the main consideration for end users when purchasing PNDs. IDC believes that the market will have further integration of brands while other IT product manufacturers will continue to enter this market.

IDC believes that personal portable navigation product services should also become more intelligent. With the fast development of a national transportation information system, PND applications should include one-click navigation, voice navigation, real-time traffic, dynamic traffic, map upgrades, online search, and other functions that are becoming increasingly important in the navigation business. Software vendors, hardware manufacturers, and solution providers should deepen their cooperation and integration of existing resources.

In China, the navigation map market is highly concentrated, with three major manufacturers dominating the market. However, demand for more personalized and distinctive services will bring a challenge for their monopoly and provide opportunities for innovation and newcomers. Compared to developed countries, the industry still needs to develop more applications with a faster speed.
