Surging demand for smartphones and multiSIM models pushed up global handset shipments by 17 percent to reach 350 million units in the first quarter this year from 298 million units last year, according to a report from market research company, Strategy Analytics.

Strategy Analytics' report described the year's first quarter increase as "healthy" despite supply-chain disruptions related to the Japan earthquake tragedy and ongoing mild component shortages in areas such as touchscreens, memory and cameras.

It reported that the growing demand for Smartphones in mature regions and the continuing popularity of multiSIM models in emerging markets would, in fact, offset the effects of the select component shortages which, it said, would continue, at least during the next six to nine months, and cause restricted volumes or increase input prices for some handset makers.

"But at this stage, on the whole, the operational challenges posed by these parts constraints remain minor rather than major for most players," the report said.

The market research firm's report also predicted that 2011 will be the first year ever when handset shipments will exceed 300 million units per quarter.
