Front-end module integrates WiMAX, WiFi

Avago Technologies have begun to distribute samples of the AFEM-S257. The AFEM-S257 is a complete RF front-end module (FEM) that allows WiMAX to work with other cellular and WiFi radios in the same device.

The module has two receive ports and a single transmit port in a small 5mm x 7mm x 1mm package. According to Avago, the AFEM-S257's small size, is ideal for space-constrained mobile applications in the 2.5 to 2.7GHz frequency rangeproviding up to 25 percent space savings over discrete WiMAX solutions.

The module integrates multiple high-performance technologies, which reduces the PCB board footprint, simplifies the design of the device and cuts the time for production and time-to-market.

It also uses Avago's proprietary 0.25-?m GaAs enhancement-mode pHEMT process and leading-edge Film Bulk Acoustic Resonator (FBAR) filtering technologies.

The FBAR technology, according to Avago, delivers steep rolloff and low insertion loss, resulting in extended battery life and talk time and better signal quality. It also features a high noise rejection of 35 dBc, enabling fewer interference issues between IEEE 802.16 WiMAX and other radios.

Further, the AFEM-S257 module has 24 dBm of WiMAX-compliant output power and maintains an error vector magnitude (EVM) of 2.5 percent at 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM).

James Wilson, Avago's senior director of marketing for wireless products, said the module offers a complete and compact solution for easier and faster development of mobile WiMAX applications. "With Avago FBAR filtering technology delivering unparalleled out-of-band rejection, the module offers the performance major smartphone makers demand," Wilson said.

Other features of the module include 18 percent power added efficiency (PAE); all RF ports matched to 50? for simplified design; 3V to 5V power supply for TX path; TX gain of 34 dB; 3.5 dB Noise Figure from ANT to RX; and 25 dB of TX/RX isolation and RX1/RX2 isolation.
