An In-Stat report has revealed that shipments of WiFi Direct-enabled digital televisions (DTVs) will reach 80 million by the year 2015. As DTVs become the main display in most homes, manufacturers are now targeting DTVs to be fully WiFi Direct-ready.

The first applications to adopt WiFi Direct include mobile PCs, digital televisions (DTVs), and mobile phones. These devices are the respective centers of the PC, CE, and mobile device clusters and their annual shipments reach hundreds of millions.

The report from In-Stat entitled, "WiFi Direct:It's All about the Software DTV's," has noted that DTVs are eyed to become the main wireless player of images and video in homes. Because of this, its shipment is forecasted to increase rapidly in the next years.

On the other hand, people are still asking whether WiFi Direct will ultimately help increase the penetration of WiFi. Brian O'Rourke, research director at In-Stat, said, "WiFi is already doing very well, with increasing penetration rates throughout PCs, PC peripherals, CE devices, and mobile phones. As a peer-to-peer networking technology, WiFi Direct may be the most help in CE, where WiFi's impact has been more modest than in the PC world. It is in the CE market, particularly portable CE devices, where WiFi Direct may have the most added value."

Aside from DTVs, the In-Stat report also forecasted that by 2014, every PC, CE device and mobile phone that will be shipped with WiFi silicon will be WiFi Direct-enabled. It also adds that mobile PCs will adopt WiFi Direct more quickly than any other application. This year alone, Wi-Fi Direct-enabled device shipments will reach 173 million, said In-Stat.
