After establishing a dedicated smart community business division in October 2010 Toshiba Corp. now plans to triple its funding for the expansion of its smart community-related business, including its smart grid and building facilities, to $11.916 billion in 2015 from $3.732 billion in 2010. The business unit reports directly to Toshiba's president and CEO.

This developed as Toshiba and Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) have both signified their plans to "synergistically collaborate" to identify and develop opportunities to help realize their vision of a shared smart community and to capitalize on their strategic work in the areas of cloud and connectivity, networking and intelligent infrastructure.

No details of this "synergistic collaboration," such as funding or resource allocations and development timetables have been provided by the two companies as of presstime.

According to Toshiba corporate executive vice-president and smart community division general manager Toshiharu Watanabe, the "synergistic convergence" of Toshiba's rich expertise in social infrastructure applications and solutions with HP's advanced IT infrastructure, solutions and cloud services "will open up ways to provide outstanding excellence in the ever-growing smart community business field." He said most information systems that support today's social infrastructure, including utilities, water supply, transportation, telecommunications, medicine and public services, operate in a closed-loop environment within each individual industry or field of application.

In future smart communities, cloud computing is expected to realize all-the-time, everywhere synergistic collaboration among IT systems and services, resulting in even more convenient and comfortable lifestyles, by simultaneously contributing to energy conservation and realizing a greener planet.

HP enterprise sales strategy and global accounts vice-president Brian Cohen explained that powerful demographic changes are forcing organizations to find smarter ways to manage and deliver critical resources and services, such as energy, healthcare, education and transportation. According to Cohen, HP has developed and is researching technologies designed to fundamentally transform today's infrastructures to deliver secure, seamless, context-aware experiences for consumers, communities and businesses. "Our collaboration with Toshiba is intended to support our growth in delivering these solutions," said Cohen who added that HP creates new possibilities "for technology to have a meaningful impact" on people, businesses, governments and society.

HP brings together a portfolio that spans printing, personal computing, software, services and IT infrastructure at the convergence of the cloud and connectivity, in order to create seamless, secure, "context-aware experiences for a connected world," Cohen said.
