PWM controller saves space

Fairchild Semiconductor International Inc. has introduced the FAN6863, a highly-integrated PWM controller that claims to offer lower standby power and higher efficiency in a small package size.

Fairchild said the controller, packaged in a small form factor SSOT-6, is ideal for space constrained designs. Despite its small size, it functions similar to a device in a larger package, the company said.

It added that consumer electronics under 40W such as adapters, set top boxes, netbooks, and digital photo frames which normally require The controller minimizes standby power consumption by using a proprietary green-mode function that provides off-time modulation to continuously decrease the switching frequency under light-load conditions. Under zero-load conditions, the power supply enters burst-mode, which shuts off the PWM output.
