The "Global Touchless Sensing and Gesture Recognition Market (2010C2015)" report published by MarketsandMarkets revealed that by 2015, the global market for touchless sensing and gesture recognition is expected to be worth $3656.8 million (27.6 percent CAGR) and $625 million (25.6 percent CAGR) respectively.

The market research report stated that touchless sensing market has gained momentum since last year and is rapidly increasing. Companies are realizing the potential of this market and are responding to customer needs for better hygiene and foolproof security. The touchless biometric systems, which are more accurate than touch-base biometric systems, are also showing a market climb, according to the report. The touchless fingerprint recognition system can even take a picture of a fingerprint even if the finger has a cut on it. In the case of iris recognition and face recognition, accuracy is maintained by ensuring the features of the iris or the face do not change over the years, the report added.

The gesture recognition market, expected to grow from $200 million to $625 million from 2010 to 2015, was commercialized in 3Q10 with the launch of the Microsoft XBOX Kinect hardware. Gesture recognition has its applications in several sectors ranging from entertainment, consumer electronics and transportation in healthcare. As a new technology, the market acceptance of this industry is still very low as users are not yet aware of the full extent the technology can bring. However, MarketsandMarkets predicts this sector will grow in the next seven to eight years.
