A recent survey for the second quarter of 2011 conducted by WitsView, a research arm of TrendForce Corp., has revealed that there is a 12.7 percent QoQ growth on the global shipments of large-sized panels. The survey also saw an 8 percent YoY growth to reach 177 million units.

According to the survey, YoY LCD shipments for netbooks were up 4.9 percent and shipments for LCD TV panels also grew 0.01 percent. However, LCD shipments for monitors and large-sized notebooks were down 0.1 percent and 5.7 percent, respectively. Tablet PCs had the biggest YoY growth of 597 percent.

With forecasts of growing demands for all kinds of application products, the weak YoY shipment performance of LCD panels is an indication of a future cool-down on demands for all LCD-related devices. This could be due to inflation issues and the debt crisis in Europe and the U.S. As there is an oversupply of panels, companies are confident that there will be no panel shortage.

Although panel prices remain rather low recently, panel procurements in the first half of the year have been rather conservative due to ambiguous market demand and tighter control over inventory levels among downstream channels and brand name makers.

The Q2 TV market, which was driven by sales during China's May Day Holidays, added 6.1 percent QoQ growth of panel shipments. However, monitor panel shipments only grew 1.8 percent because of prior inventories and low sales.

QoQ growth of notebook panels and tablet PCs were 11.8 percent and 108.3 percent, respectively. The growth of tablet PCs were mostly driven by Apple products and new tablet offering of non-Apple vendors. Second tier white-box makers have been installing netbook panels on white-box tablet PCs, such that the QoQ growth of netbook panel shipment grew 13.3 percent.

Taiwan panel makers such as AUO and CMI have all raised their production capacity utilization rates to meet the market demands in China. They have been actively securing their relationships with downstream customers so that orders will not go to their competitors. Because of this, the overall share of panel shipments of panel makers from Taiwan only drop slightly to 40 percent from 40.5 percent. Notably, the overall share of panel shipments of Korean panel makers has slightly climbed from 51.7 percent to 51.8 percent.

LCD market share

The popularity of Taiwan-made panels in the Chinese market, the restocking among customers in China May Labor Day Holidays, and the secured tie between Taiwan panel makers and downstream customers all contributed to the rise in the market share of Taiwan panel makers, with 41.9 percent from 41.1 percent. Korean panel makers' market share also grew from 49.2 percent to 50.7 percent. Japanese panel makers, on the other hand, failed to actively restore their utilization rates due to the March 11 earthquake and inventory issues. Their market share dropped from 9.1 percent to 5.8 percent.

Panel makers in Taiwan still hold the lead in the shipment ration of monitor panels, despite the downturn from 45.6 percent to 43.8 percent. In terms of the shipment ratio of tablet PC panels, the ratio for Taiwan panel makers grew from 9 percent to 21.2 percent. This is because of the rise of tablet PCs from non-Apple makers and with CMI securing iPad2 panel orders.
