PWM generator features 48 12bit resolution channels

Linear Technology Corp. has introduced the LT8500, a pulse width modulation (PWM) generator with 48 channels that each features a separately adjustable 12bit (4,096 steps) PWM register and 6bit (64 steps) 50 percent correction register that are accessible via serial interface in TTL/CMOS logic.

The LT8500 supports a range of PWM-intensive applications such as LED control as well as industrial and robotic applications. For example, it can be used with three LT3595As, which are 16-channel LED drivers, to deliver 48 independently-dimmed LED strings for large LCD displays.

The LT8500 operates in a 3C5.5V input range that allows it to work from a variety of standard power buses. The 40ns on-time of the device offers very wide dynamic contrast ratios, the company stated. It also offers two diagnostic information flags: synchronization error and open LED. The flags are sent with additional state information on the serial data interface (SDI) during status read back. The 50MHz cascadable SDI includes buffering and skew-balancing. The combination of minimal externals and a 5 x 9mm QFN package provide a highly compact solution footprint for multi-channel PWM applications, Linear Technology added.

The LT8500EUHH is priced at $2.95 each in 1,000-piece quantities. The extended temperature version, the LT8500IUHH or I-grade, is also available at $3.25 each in 1,000-piece quantities. All versions are available from stock.
