4Gb NOR flash targets graphics, automotive apps

Spansion Inc. has unveiled what it touts as the industry's first single-die 4Gb NOR flash memory at 65nm. The new addition to the Spansion GL-S product line provides high-quality and the fastest read performance in the industryup to 45 percent faster than competing products, the company stated.

The device is based on Spansion's proprietary MirrorBit charge-trapping technology. The Spansion GL-S family is offered in 128Mb through two-gigabyte densities and has been giving the company design win momentum among consumer, automotive, gaming, telecom and industrial applications.

The Spansion GL-S is engineered for handheld consumer games, game cartridges, handheld learning devices, automotive infotainment, information kiosks and industrial entertainment machines such as arcade games. According to third party benchmarks, the programming speed of the GL-S that operates from 0C to 85C is 30 percent faster than the competition.

"Consumers have high expectations for speed and quality for their gaming and infotainment applications as manufacturers continue to add more interactivity, multidimensional graphics, multitouch and animation to these systems. To produce the best, interactive experience, these manufacturers require high-density, faster read flash memory performance," said Avo Kanadjian, VP of marketing, Spansion. "With this 4Gb product, Spansion extends our high density, NOR flash memory leadership in the embedded market to enable our customers to deliver innovative electronics with the best the user experience."

The company will offer complementary customized software drivers and flash file system software and will begin sampling in August with production in 4Q11.
