The Master Process Controller (MPC), jointly developed by ESAB Holdings Ltd and Applied Thermal Sciences Inc. (ATS), is now entirely owned by ESAB after completing the purchase from ATS. The MPC is a patented real-time control system for managing the laser, MIG/MAG welding equipment and the motion system that carries the laser and MIG/MAG welding heads.

With ESABs acquisition, its Hybrio hybrid laser arc welding (HLAW) equipment can be used on thicker materials, larger workpieces and joints with wider gaps. During the welding process, the MPC uses sensors to monitor the joint fit-up, weld geometry and welding conditions. The adaptive welding control system for HLAW also makes necessary adjustments to ensure that the process achieves uniform fill, consistent penetration and excellent weld quality for the entire length of the weld, the company stated.

The HLAW enables customers to reduce the time and costs associated with joint preparation, post-weld operations and rework with its improved tolerance of gap variations, ESAB added.

ESAB is committed to the HLAW process and has put in place an infrastructure so that it can produce, sell and support this process. In addition, the company said it will continue developing the process to create modern hybrid laser arc welding systems that will help customers maximize productivity and maintain exceptional quality.

The Hybrio technology performs welding process at three to ten times the speed of conventional processes, with 80?90 percent less heat input, claimed ESAB. Comparing Hybrio technology to Mig welding is like comparing emails to faxes?its a whole new world of welding speed, noted Nazmi Adams, global marketing director for ESAB. Available in gantry, robotic and specialized automated systems, ESAB's Hybrio is designed for a range of industrial applications.
