Strategy Analytics Inc. has announced that Nvidia is the leading player in the tablet apps processor market in terms of unit volume share. Although Apple holds a 61 percent unit share in 1Q11, Nvidia's dual-core Cortex-A9 processors and Honeycomb Android design pushed up its share to reach 34.4 percent in the same period. Nvidia is expected to maintain this momentum with its upcoming Kal-El quad-core processor.

The company initially gave an estimate that Nvidia 's tablet apps processor share will reach 48.6 percent in 2Q11. Nvidia's Tegra 2 processors are present in multiple tablets from tier-one vendors including the Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9, Dell Streak 7, LG Optimus Pad 3D, Acer Iconia Tab 500 and Asus Eee Pad Transformer.

Also included in the top five non-iPad tablet apps processor rankings are Qualcomm, TI, Samsung and Intel, the report noted. It added that x86 processors accounted for less than five percent of total tablet apps processors shipped in 1Q11. Intel is expected to support Android tablets later this year improving the x86-based processor share in tablets.

Moreover, standalone apps processors accounted for 93.5 percent of total tablet apps processors shipped in 1Q11. Strategy Analytics believes that standalone apps processors will dominate the tablet market in the near-to-medium term given the business model and pricing issues surrounding WiFi-only versus 3G/4G connectivity integrated tablets. Qualcomm's upcoming LTE Snapdragon processor MSM8960 is expected to potentially increase integrated processors' share in tablets.

"The non-iPad camp is still waiting for a blockbuster product. We expect Amazon's rumored tablet and Microsoft's Windows 8 platform will be the catalysts for further tablet apps processor vendors' dynamics," forecasted Stuart Robinson, director of Strategy Analytics' handset component technologies program.
