Gate drivers target 3-phase motor drive apps

Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) has released integrated three-phase brushless motor pre-drivers. The DRV8301 is touted to cut board space by 60 percent and drive sub-10A to 60A external FETs. This allows the devices to deliver current scalability, enhanced thermal performance and higher efficiency in brushless DC (BLDC) and permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) applications.

The gate driver ICs can be used in ventilation pumps, medical pumps, commercial refrigeration cooling systems, robotics, power tools, e-bikes and other high-torque industrial motor control applications. The DRV8301's 1.5A step-down voltage powers the system MCU such as the C2000 Piccolo, two current-sense amplifiers with integrated input and feedback resistors for current measurements, and an SPI interface for device configuration.

TI's motor pre-drivers provide gate drive current up to 1.7A source and 2.3A sink from a single 8 to 60V supply. Slew rate and dead time can be adjusted. The devices also include adjustable gain, output offset and DC calibration circuitry to reduce board space and BOM. The DC calibration circuitry minimizes DC offset and drift over temperature to improve motor performance.

Additionally, the DRV8301 has a two-stage thermal, cycle-by-cycle over current protection, undervoltage and shoot through protection with detailed fault feedback that eases design complexity and improves system reliability.

The DRV8301 is available in a 14x8.1mm HTSSOP package for $2.50 for 1,000 units.
