Antenna couplers control 3G wireless devices

STMicroelectronics (ST) has launched its new chips which can manage antenna power in mainstream wireless products. These ICs can develop and expand the battery life of mobile phones.

Currently, multifunction, multiband cellphones, smartphones, tablets, and 3G USB dongles, continuously adjust their transmitter power to optimize contact with the network as environmental conditions change. This activity ensures a reliable network connection and varies transmitter power, to maximize battery life. Antenna couplers monitor the power radiated by the antenna to perform this constant adjustment. Whereas most couplers measure the power radiated by the antenna in the forward direction only, ST's bidirectional devices also measure the reflected power, to improve control and efficiency.

The CPL-WB-00D3 and DCPL-WB-00D3 antennas are single and dual-path antenna couplers, respectively, intended for single and dual-antenna systems. The antenna couplers simplify circuit design and PC-board space by integrating attenuators on coupled and isolated ports. This extra integration is achieved using ST's proprietary integrated passive device (IPD) technology. The other types of couplers need separate attenuators. In addition, insulated glass-substrate fabrication and wafer-level packaging reduce total device height and footprint compared to alternative Low-Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (LTCC) technology.

The new devices belong to ST's miniature bidirectional couplers with IPD inductors, and are as small as 1.31mm compared with earlier 1.71.4mm devices. The smaller packaging frees extra pc-board space inside 3G devices. With low insertion losses, high directivity and wide operating frequency range, the antenna couplers are compatible with all 3G network standards, from GSM/EDGE to WCDMA/TD-SCDMA.

Other major features of CPL-WB-00D3 and DCPL-WB-00D3 antennas are as follows: (1) 50? nominal I/O impedance; (2) 824MHz to 2170MHz operating frequency; (3) Less than 0.2dB insertion loss; (4) 34dB typical coupling factor; (5) 25dB typical directivity; (6) Measures 13001000690?m (CPL-WB-00D3) and 16701440650?m (DCPL-WB-00D3).

The CPL-WB-00D3 and DCPL-WB-00D3 are currently in volume production, and are priced at $0.215 and $0.305 for 1,000 units, respectively. Alternative pricing options may be available for higher quantities.
