Agilent Technologies recently conducted a series of forums in Asia focused on its test and measurement technologies. Vivek Nanda met with them in Singapore, one of several locationsother cities in the tour were Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Taipei, Hsinchu, Seoul, Bangalore, New Delhi and Penang.

In conversation with EE Times-Asia, Lawrence Liu, regional manager for Singapore and emerging economies in South Asia Pacific, discusses the forum, and the Electronic Measurements Group's Asian business and modular instrument strategy.

Lawrence Liu

Liu: We are seeing a lot of MNCs expanding their R&D and validation into places like Singapore, Malaysia and even China.

EE Times-Asia: What are your objectives in organizing the forum?
Liu: The Agilent Measurement Forum (AMF) is the largest forum in Asia. It is an annual event held across Asia where we bring together a team of global technical experts to share our new products and technologies.

As technologies advance, design and test needs get more and more complex; time-to-market becomes an increasingly challenging issue faced by technology companies. Through this forum, we aim is to bring the latest design and test solutions to help our customers address these challenges.

The AMF serves as a one-stop show where all our valued customers can be exposed to various different solutions at a single event and broaden their knowledge of the test solutions available. They have the opportunity not only to keep abreast of the latest technologies, but also to interact with our experts as well as participate in the hands-on demos.

What new products are you launching at the AMF?
The focus for this year's AMF is on modular solutions, high-speed/data applications and nanotechnologies, which are covered in three different tracks at the forum. [Editor's note: While the forum in Asia has a common theme, topics, presentations and products are tailored to suit each location.]

As this year's focus is on modular solutions, high-speed/data applications and nanotechnologies, I'd like to highlight three key products:

12bit arbitrary waveform generator (M8190A) targeted primarily at defense/radar applications

High speed DDR logic analyzer (U4154A) targeted at conformance testing of high-speed communications, and

Scanning microwave microscopy (SMM) targeted at nanotechnology applications in biomedical, material science and physics

Custom OFDM signal generation
Here's an application note that provides an introduction to OFDM technology and explains how to use the Agilent SystemVue software to generate custom OFDM/OFDMA signals.

It also details the method for linking OFDM signals from 89600B SystemVue to the Agilent Vector Signal Analysis (VSA) software for demodulation. Download it here.

[Editor's Note: Agilent also demonstrated its vector signal analysis (VSA) software (89600B) and hardware that's on an AXIe platform. Liu said the hardware can go up to 800MHz bandwidth and that they had recently shown the hardware to a customer in Taiwan.]

How is Agilent doing in the Asia markets, particularly in the emerging economies?
Asia constitutes some 42% of Agilent's revenue in Q2FY11 which ended April, reflecting a 27% increase compared to Q2FY10 (year-over-year). So this region is very important to Agilent where we have a direct presence or presence through our partners (distributors, technical partners).
