Diodes Inc. has released the AL8807 buck LED driver that claims to reduce EMI in low-cost MR16 LED lamps. The device features up to 1MHz switching frequency and ensures strongly controlled rise and fall times.

The AL8807 can operate at input voltages from 6-30V and provides up to eight series-connected LEDs with a constant 1A current in order to deliver the required higher output powers. The driver's 5 percent current accuracy means it will meet the requirements of most general low-voltage lighting applications. It will also lead to an improvement in inter-lamp luminance matching in 3W LED lighting systems, noted Diodes. The driver is up to 96 percent efficient and its output current is simple to set using a single external resistor, the company added.

Dimming control is performed via the application of either a DC voltage or PWM signal on the driver's control input, which also protects against any over-driving of the LED current. The AL8807's 1000:1 PWM dimming ratio and DC dimming range of 16-100 percent give users flexible and wide-ranging lamp brightness control, Diodes stated.

The AL8807 is available in the small footprint SOT25 package and will soon be available in the MSOP-8EP package.
