Visionary Steve Jobs has lost his battle with cancer and has died at the age of 56. The news was officially announced by Apple Inc. and his high school friend Stephen Wozniak. Jobs and Wozniak started Apple in 1972 in a suburban California garage.

Jobs has been publicly struggling with cancer for several years. He underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer in 2004 and then received a liver transplant in 2009. While undergoing treatment, Jobs still remained as the face of the company, taking time to introduce new products to the global market in his trademark turtleneck and blue jeans, though in recent events he already appeared gaunt and pale.

Jobs took three medical leaves of absence as Apple's chief executive officer before finally stepping down in August and turning over the helm the company's chief operating officer, Timothy Cook. Even though he was no longer the CEO, Jobs still participated in the company's affairs.

Apple's Steve Jobs steps down as CEO
Apple's iconic leader, Steve Jobs, has announced that he is stepping down as CEO of the company he co-founded back in 1976. Read more about Jobs resignation here.

"I have always said that if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's C.E.O., I would be the first to let you know," Jobs said in his resignation letter released by the company. "Unfortunately, that day has come."

"We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today," Apple's board of directors said in a statement. "Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve."

Tim Cook released a statement saying, "Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor."

"Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple," Cook said. "We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much," he added.

Jobs will not only be remembered as a computer visionary, but also as a maverick. He pushed for an independent path for Apple that made it frustrating for partners to work with, but it also allowed the company to create unique products.

Jobs is survived by his wife, Laurene, and four children.
