Compal Electronics Inc. and Microsoft Corp. have announced that they have entered a patent licensing agreement. Under the agreement, Compal will be able to use a broad range of Microsoft's patent portfolio in its tablets, mobile phones, e-readers and other consumer devices running on the Android or Chrome platforms.

The details of the agreement were not disclosed but the parties indicate that Microsoft will receive royalties from Compal as part of the agreement. This would mean that while smartphones powered by Microsoft's software directly compete with Google's Android handsets, Microsoft stands to benefit from the profits from Compal's Android phones.

"We are pleased to have reached this agreement with Compal, one of the leaders in the original design manufacturing or ODM industry," sa Horacio Gutierrez, Microsoft's deputy general counsel. "We are proud of the continued success of our licensing program in resolving intellectual property issues surrounding Android and Chrome," he added.
